With significant growth in online instruction and learning practices in higher education, measuring the extent to which students are engaged in online courses is becoming the center of attention among research scholars and practitioners. While there is a growing body of literature exploring student engagement in on-site classes with more face-to-face instructional opportunities, few studies have been conducted to address student engagement in Applied Science blended programs. To that end, data from a mixed-methods study that adopted a questionnaire and qualitative data from follow-up interviews were collected. A total of 137 students learning at the undergraduate university level participated in this study and completed "the student engagement" scale. Results of the questionnaire and the follow-up interview will be presented and discussed.

This study provides guidance for further research in designing more cognitively and socially engaging tasks and courses in blended/online higher education. By the end of this session, the audience will: a) Learn about the significance of task design for online courses and programs, b) have a deeper understanding of student engagement in online learning environments, c) Learn about multiple dimensions of engagement in learning such as emotional and cognitive.
