Building Community in Online Course: Our Findings and Ideas

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The session will summarize our pre-pandemic research findings. Our international research study compared the use of text-based versus video-based discussions in online courses to ascertain students’ perceptions of social presence. This study was conducted at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario and Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on a diverse group of both graduate and undergraduate students. Our session will also incorporate time for discussion and the presentation of some practical tips and tools that can be used to help build community in online courses.

Our session learning outcomes include:
- Share our findings regarding student perceptions of text based and video based discussions
- Share our experiences as faculty with building a sense of community with students in discussions
- Discuss participants experiences and share ideas for teaching online to build a sense of community
